Got a room with a tub 🛁. It was super close to the Wharf, right in the heart of things.

Melville House b&b along with the other B&B's owned by this group are authentic 17th century homes. It just added to our day in historic New Port. If you are not into historic/authentic period homes, this is not the place for you. It has everything you need with a modern bathroom, just on a small scale. The home does smell a little musty, but I have stayed in hotels that smelled mustier. This one is hundreds of years old. I would stay there over and over again if I get the opportunity.

Our trip came just hours/days before hurricane Irene. We went anyway. The owner/manager was extremely accommodating and allowed us to adjust our schedule to come, stay and go as we wished.
The Inn was in a denselyhoused section of the city with narrow streets and close quarters.Overall, I would classify the accommodations as "humble".

Melville house was close to the action in downtown Newport. The breakfast was very good.
I did not like that my room did not have its own bathroom. We had to use a bathroom down the hall. This was very inconvenient. The parking in the hotel was also very tight. My new car was dented as a hotel employee and another guest were trying to maneuver back there and got in an accident.

The rooms at this place are welcoming and quite peaceful, with spacious bathrooms, and it's conveniently located near a grand mansion just a short distance away.

GREAT location to walk to anyplace in old Newport, RI. Parking available. Located in the perfect place in town - quiet, yet one block from harbor, shopping, dining. Incredibly OLD, historic area. The Melville House is from the 1750s, so it is "creaky" but very comfortable. Nice staff. WELL worth the money for the whole experience.
Owner has multiple B&Bs on same street. Melville House has no WIFI or TVs yet, but others do. Not sure that it should get them either. It was a very quiet place and TVs would change the atmosphere. WIFI available at Starbucks down the street or in the other B&Bs across the street.

The location is absolutely perfect for a visit to Newport. We could walk everywhere easily especially to the many restaurants and pubs. The room was comfy and nicely decorated. The bed was great! The bathroom was tiny but not an issue. The price was fair for high tourist season in Newport. The made to order breakfast was very good.
It was a bit confusing figuring out the "process". The Melville House is actually one of a number of properties (I think it is called the "Inns of Newport"). Once we understood it was more of a "chain" vice a private Inn, it was fine. You have to sign up for breakfast (not served at Melville) and if the seating is full you go to another house. Not a huge issue, just not clear when we checked in. We were given an upgrade when we arrived (not at Melville House) and the room was small and a bit shabby (the bathroom was bigger). I ask to see where I was originally booked and it was a much nicer room. We took that. (I think the upgrade was for a tv... Not something needed if you are going to see Newport).

The food here is tasty, with a nice variety of choices 🍴. It's in a great spot, right next to Washington Square and Thames St, close to all the downtown shops and restaurants.

Very friendly staff, great cook. Also accommodating in respect to room choice.
The soap should be new every day and same for the shampoo, and set should include conditioner.

Beautiful rooms, loved the location - very close to shopping, pier, beach. Will stay at Melville House again.
At registration it was not made clear what the breakfast plan was - I was veryk confused, did not know I was supposed to sign up for a time and place for breakfast - however one of the morning staff took care of it for us, and it was not a problem at all

We were pleasantly surprised by our stay at Melville House. The location was fantastic, just a couple of blocks from the waterfront with plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. The room was clean and comfortable, with a cozy bed and pillows that provided a great night's sleep. The staff was helpful and accommodating, even going so far as to provide an extra mattress for our group. The free parking was a bonus as well. Despite a few minor drawbacks, overall I would recommend this hotel for its convenient location and comfortable arrangements.
